The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) flyover will be shut down for a month as the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) begins essential repair and maintenance to ensure the structure’s safety, according to Mayor Murtaza Wahab.

To help manage traffic flow during the closure, a comprehensive diversion plan has been put in place in collaboration with Karachi Traffic Police, directing commuters to alternate routes. People are encouraged to stick to these detours to avoid heavy traffic.

This update comes as Karachi faces growing frustration over persistent power outages, which have sparked street protests across the city.

Angry residents in areas like Liaquatabad and Azizabad took to the streets, blocking roads with burning tyres and chanting slogans against K-Electric and the government.

The demonstrations were triggered by long power cuts made worse by sweltering temperatures, leading to major traffic chaos on several important roads.

Authorities are calling for calm and have assured citizens that efforts are underway to address electricity issues and infrastructure repairs.

The KPT flyover is one of the city’s early examples of a multi-level bridge. Its complex design makes it stand out, featuring several ramps for merging and exiting traffic, and an innovative layout for its time.
