Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved a plan to gradually remove meter readers from all electricity distribution companies, with the exception of K-Electric.

As part of this shift, a new self-meter reading app called “Apna Meter Apni Reading” will be launched, allowing consumers to submit their own meter readings.

During a high-level meeting held on June 17, 2025, the Prime Minister instructed the Power Division to introduce a Power Smart Mobile App in both national and regional languages to make it accessible to everyone.

A trial version will be launched first to identify and fix any technical problems. The government has earmarked Rs316 million for this initiative.

The Power Division has been given one month to prepare a detailed strategy for fully phasing out meter readers.

A clear framework of responsibilities has been outlined for PITC and MEPCO in terms of planning, implementation, and monitoring.

The project will include the rollout of key apps such as Power Smart App, Apna Meter Apni Reading, CCMS+, and Lineman Mobile Solution, all of which will undergo comprehensive testing before their official launch.

The Prime Minister has also directed that any cost savings achieved from ending meter reader jobs should directly benefit consumers through reduced charges.
