The federal government is likely to greenlight Pakistan’s long-awaited National Electric Vehicle (NEV) Policy next week, marking a major step toward cleaner and greener transportation.
Officials say the draft, prepared by the Ministry of Industries in consultation with key stakeholders, has been submitted to the prime minister and will soon go before the federal cabinet for final approval.
The policy aims for a bold shift: over 30% of new vehicle sales in Pakistan should be electric by 2030.
To encourage adoption, the NEV policy includes generous incentives:
- Rs. 50,000 subsidy per electric motorcycle
- Rs. 200,000 subsidy for every electric rickshaw
- A total of Rs. 4 billion has been earmarked to fund these subsidies.
Additionally, the policy outlines support for developing a nationwide network of electric vehicle charging stations.
On Thursday, Haroon Akhtar Khan, the Prime Minister’s Special Assistant, met with a COMSATS delegation to discuss EV technology advancement and converting regular motorbikes to electric power.
The meeting was attended by key officials, including Industries Secretary Saif Anjum, COMSATS Executive Director Nafees Zakaria, and Engineering Development Board CEO Khuda Bakhsh Ali.
