The Ministry of Energy has started a nationwide rollout of smart meters under its 2025-26 service improvement plan to modernize power distribution, ensure accurate billing, and rebuild public trust in electricity companies.
According to a ministry spokesperson, the project became possible after a major cost reduction, with the price of single-phase smart meters falling from around Rs20,000 to Rs15,000 through strict procurement reforms and competitive market practices.
Nearly 80 percent of Pakistan’s 38 million electricity consumers use single-phase meters, and the government estimates that replacing five million meters each year could save up to Rs25 billion annually.
Under the new system, manual meter reading will be largely replaced by remote automation, minimizing errors, improving transparency, and resolving billing disputes more effectively.
Consumers will also gain access to real-time usage data through mobile applications, helping them manage monthly bills more efficiently.
Officials said the ministry expects further price reductions through global competitive bidding, adding that the initiative represents a major step toward digitalizing Pakistan’s energy sector and improving service quality at power distribution companies.
