The Punjab government has introduced a plan to control unnecessary water usage by charging people strictly based on how much water they actually consume.

WASA Lahore has floated its first tender to buy 10,000 smart water meters, costing a total of Rs500 million. These meters will have an automated reading feature, and the pilot phase will start in Johar Town A-1 Block.

According to WASA’s managing director, consumers will be able to check and confirm their readings online. Each smart meter will cost Rs35,000 to install, and people will be allowed to pay the amount in easy installments.

WASA has also set up a revolving fund to support the purchase of these meters. The department aims to expand the project by buying more meters through tenders three times a year.
