The Pakistan Super League (PSL) has introduced a key change to its playing conditions for the 2026 season, allowing captains to submit two separate team sheets before the toss. This move is aimed at reducing the traditional advantage gained from winning the coin toss.
The new rule was applied during the season opener in Lahore, where defending champions Lahore Qalandars played against Hyderabad Kingsmen. Captains Shaheen Shah Afridi and Marnus Labuschagne gave the match referee two different line-ups before the toss and confirmed their final XI only after the result of the toss was known.
Under Clause 1.2.1 of the PSL’s playing conditions: “Before the toss, each captain may submit two (2) different XI lineups in writing to the PSL Match Referee. Each lineup must include 11 players and a maximum of 4 substitute fielders.
After the toss, each captain must finalise one of the two submitted lineups by signing the selected team sheet. Once the final lineup has been nominated, no player listed in the selected playing eleven may be changed before the start of the match without the consent of the opposing captain.”
The change is seen as a progressive step to balance toss-related advantages, especially in night games where dew can affect conditions. Dew makes the ball slippery, reducing the effectiveness of spinners and often impacting the outcome of the second innings.
This rule allows teams to adjust their XI according to the match situation. A team batting first might include an extra fast bowler instead of a spinner, while a side bowling second can strengthen its batting line-up. In the Lahore opener, however, dew was not a factor as wind and cloud cover kept conditions dry.

On the field, Lahore Qalandars started their title defence strongly, defeating Hyderabad Kingsmen by 69 runs. Batting first, the Qalandars scored 199 for six in 20 overs.
Left-handed opener Fakhar Zaman led the innings with a quick 53 off 39 balls, hitting ten boundaries. Mohammad Naeem added 30 off 19, while Haseebullah Khan (40* off 28) and Sikandar Raza (24 off 10) ensured a strong finish.
In reply, Hyderabad Kingsmen were bowled out for 130, with the Qalandars’ pace attack of Haris Rauf, Ubaid Shah, Shaheen Afridi, and Mustafizur Rahman dominating. Sikandar Raza also contributed with important breakthroughs using his spin.
