LAHORE: A classmate of Owais Sultan, the Lahore student who took his own life by jumping from the fourth floor of a private university, has confirmed that academic pressure may have been a contributing factor, as reported on Wednesday.

Earlier, Owais Sultan’s brother also cited academic pressure and called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Reports indicate that the incident occurred on December 19 at around 8:10 am. Fellow student Hamza stated that Owais Sultan was not allowed to enter a classroom by a teacher. After sitting outside for some time, he jumped from the fourth floor.

Hamza added that Owais had often appeared distressed in class and had a low attendance record. He claimed that the student was under severe mental stress due to being unable to sit for examinations. He alleged that the university administration added further pressure regarding fees and other matters.

Following the tragedy, university officials and legal advisers confirmed that a seven-member inquiry committee has been formed to investigate the incident. The committee will examine whether harassment or other factors played a role in the student’s death.

Earlier, students at the university had staged protests against the administration, demanding accountability and stronger measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
