PDMA confirms 406 deaths, massive losses in KP flood disaster

PESHAWAR: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reported on Sunday that 406 people have lost their lives in cloudburst and flash floods since August 15. β€œThe death toll included 305 men, 55 women and 46 children,” PDMA confirmed.

The authority stated in a factsheet that 247 others have been injured in various incidents, including 179 men, 38 women and 30 children.

Buner district has been the hardest hit, where the death toll has reached 337. In Swabi, 46 people died, while in Dera Ismail Khan, a roof collapse killed eight people and injured 48 others.

PDMA said the heavy rains and floods damaged a total of 3,526 properties, with 2,945 houses partially damaged and 577 destroyed.

The losses to agriculture in Buner are reported to be severe, with 55,890 acres of farmland submerged. In addition, 825 shops were wiped out, and 3,638 livestock perished, dealing a heavy blow to local communities.

The Public Health Department recorded damages of Rs 194.8 million due to collapsed water channels and related infrastructure. The Education Department reported damage to 29 institutions, including one school destroyed.

The Agriculture Department estimated that 26,142 acres of crops were ruined, with financial losses exceeding Rs250 million.

Meanwhile, the Highway Authority said that 4 kilometers of road were washed away, causing damage worth over Rs320 million.

Authorities have warned that recovery and rehabilitation will demand extensive resources as the province continues to grapple with the devastation caused by the floods.
