The Government of Pakistan has announced plans to distribute 76,000 electric motorcycles this year under the Prime Minister’s Electric Vehicle Scheme.

Under this initiative, citizens will receive a subsidy of Rs80,000 per motorcycle, making electric bikes more affordable for students, daily wage earners, and low income commuters. The application and allocation process will be fully digital and automated to maintain transparency and efficiency.

Hammad Mansoor, CEO of the Engineering Development Board, shared that Rs100 billion has been set aside for the programme over the next five years, with Rs9 billion allocated for the current fiscal year.

He added that subsidies will be provided for around 116,000 electric motorcycles this year, while 76,000 units are expected to be delivered by June. Compared to existing brands in the market, these subsidized motorcycles will cost Rs50,000 to 60,000 less. Users are also likely to save up to Rs8,000 per month on fuel expenses.

To qualify, applicants must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid driving licence. The entire system, from application to approval and distribution, will operate online to ensure merit based and transparent allocation.

Officials believe the scheme will help cut down noise and air pollution, reduce the country’s fuel import costs, and promote cleaner energy use. Experts say that if implemented successfully, the initiative could reshape urban transport and speed up the shift towards electric vehicles in the years ahead.
