The government has launched a crackdown on housing societies accused of deceiving citizens with fake claims of low-cost plots and misleading advertisements.

Sources said several societies are being investigated for falsely promoting No Objection Certificates (NOCs) and making bogus promises about basic amenities like electricity, gas, and water.

Many are also accused of concealing hidden charges under development fees and offering unrealistic profit guarantees on unfinished projects.

Authorities have also taken notice of celebrity endorsements used in such campaigns, which are now being reviewed for misleading the public. Societies found using fake or edited images to depict development work will also face legal action.

Officials warned that violators could be fined up to Rs75 million, while affected citizens are being urged to file complaints with evidence so that fraudulent developers can be held accountable.
