OpenAI has introduced a new version of its assistant made for K-12 teachers. The service, called ChatGPT for Teachers, is meant for classroom use and will remain free for verified school staff until June 2027.

This launch comes at a time when students already use ChatGPT to finish homework, and now the company wants educators to benefit from the technology in their daily work as well.

According to OpenAI, ChatGPT for Teachers can assist educators with preparing assignments, planning lessons, and creating teaching material. The idea is to give teachers a chance to explore the technology at their own comfort level and in a controlled setting.

This version offers the same features found in the regular ChatGPT, including unlimited messages with GPT-5.1 Auto, app connectors, file uploads, image creation, and memory tools.

The main difference from the regular version is that it follows the Family Education Rights Act, which outlines strict guidelines for handling student information. OpenAI has also added features to help teachers work together.

Educators can share chats with their colleagues, and new conversations will start with suggestions inspired by how other teachers have used the assistant.

Before focusing directly on teachers, OpenAI rolled out ChatGPT Edu, which lets schools and universities provide access to students the same way they give email accounts. The company also launched Study Mode for all users, helping explain answers in simple steps.

OpenAI is not alone in trying to expand its role in education. Google has been offering discounts on its Gemini tools to attract more students. By reaching out to teachers, OpenAI hopes to strengthen its place in schools and encourage wider use of its models.
