KARACHI: The death toll from rain-related incidents in Karachi has climbed to 15 as the city continues to deal with the aftermath of Tuesday’s heavy monsoon showers that caused widespread urban flooding, as per the report.
Rescue teams confirmed that five people died when a wall collapsed in Gulistan-e-Johar, while another child lost his life in a similar incident in Orangi Town.
Electrocution also proved deadly, with one person killed in New Karachi and two others in the Defence Housing Authority (DHA).
Meanwhile, the body of a man was pulled from a drain near Guru Mandir, and another was recovered from Khameeso Goth. Two more lives were lost near Natha Khan, while a man died from electrocution on Shahrah-e-Faisal.
In a separate incident, a fire at a petrol pump in Malir 15 claimed one life after a victim sustained severe burns.
The heavy rainfall left many parts of Karachi submerged, disrupting daily life and paralyzing routine activities.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, during an emergency visit to review the situation, said that “Karachi will have to be dug up again, if a 100-meter rainwater drainage system is to be built.”
He emphasised the importance of establishing a modern drainage system to help the city better withstand future floods.
The CM also chaired an emergency meeting to monitor dewatering operations and directed officials to stay alert as more rain has been forecast.
He said that the city is working hard to recover from the severe flooding caused by Tuesday’s downpour.
