Thousands of fish have been found dead in Rawal Dam, raising serious concerns about water contamination and public safety.
According to local reports, the incident has alarmed residents since the dam’s water is supplied directly to Rawalpindi. Pollution levels in the dam have reportedly reached a critical point, turning the water toxic for aquatic life.
A large number of dead fish can be seen floating across the surface, creating a disturbing scene. Locals shared that while similar deaths were seen during the summer when water levels were low, this time the tragedy occurred even with the dam full.
The strong stench and visible pollution have also angered people who visit the area for leisure. One resident claimed that untreated sewage from Bani Gala and surrounding neighborhoods has been flowing into the dam for years, worsening the contamination.
Environmental experts warn that the polluted water poses a danger not only to fish and other aquatic species but also to Rawalpindi’s drinking water supply.
A similar incident took place last year when thousands of fish died after toxic substances were released into the dam. Following public outrage and media reports, the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) had launched an inquiry into the matter.
