The Lahore district administration has put forward a proposal to the Punjab government to partially restore the Basant Festival, allowing a two-day celebration under strict safety measures.

As per official sources, the plan suggests holding the event only in select historic areas of Lahore, including Shahi Qila, Mochi Gate, Bhaati Gate, and Rang Mahal, over a weekend. The move aims to revive the city’s cultural spirit of kite flying while ensuring the safety of participants and residents.

The Deputy Commissioner of Lahore has submitted detailed safety protocols to the provincial authorities, outlining steps to prevent the kind of accidents that led to Basant’s ban years ago.

These measures include restricting motorcycle entry in festival zones, making it mandatory for nearby riders to use safety helmets and neck guards, and installing protective nets along major roads.

The proposal also seeks a complete ban on nylon, chemical-coated, and metal kite strings. Only cotton or starch-based strings would be allowed, and all kites and strings would require barcode registration for monitoring. Strict legal action is proposed against unregistered sellers or anyone found violating the rules.

The Punjab government is reviewing the proposal and is expected to announce its final decision in the coming days
