A spell of heavy rain with strong winds hit several parts of Karachi on Wednesday evening, causing widespread disruption across the city, with nearly 70 percent reportedly losing electricity.

The downpour, which began around 9:30 PM local time, led to tripping in multiple areas, leaving large sections of the city without power.

Rain and gusty winds were reported in areas including Saddar, II Chundrigar Road, North Nazimabad, North Karachi, Surjani Town FB area, Defence, Clifton, Railway Colony, Delhi Colony, Gulshan-e-Jamal, Scheme 33 and Gulshan-e-Iqbal Garden and nearby localities.

Accumulation of rainwater in low-lying areas worsened the situation, causing traffic jams and making it difficult for commuters and Eid shoppers.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department had earlier forecast rain and thunderstorms in Karachi starting March 18 due to a developing weather system in the region.

Heavy rainfall in Karachi often results in power outages as a safety precaution, with electricity supply suspended in affected feeders to prevent accidents such as electrocution.

In previous similar incidents, hundreds of feeders have tripped during rain, leading to prolonged outages across the city.

The Meteorological Department also predicted rain today across Karachi and other parts of Sindh. A system of westerly winds is currently affecting most areas of the country. Rain is expected today and tomorrow in Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, and Jamshoro, with a chance of hailstorms in some parts of Karachi.

The public is encouraged to share updates about conditions in their areas as the situation continues to develop across the city.
