Punjab has unveiled a plan to establish 42 new stroke centers to strengthen treatment facilities for patients affected by strokes.

The project will be carried out in two stages. In the first stage, 24 centers will be set up, while the remaining 18 will be developed in the second stage. This effort will also be accompanied by broader improvements in the healthcare system.

The first mechanical thrombectomy center is scheduled to open at Sheikh Zaid Hospital in Rahim Yar Khan. All stroke centers will be equipped with modern technology, specialized stroke units, and trained healthcare staff. A fast-track referral mechanism, developed in collaboration with Rescue 1122, will help ensure that patients receive prompt medical attention.

The total cost of the initiative has been estimated at PKR 625 million. To overcome the shortage of neurologists, the “Locum Formula” will be introduced. Major cities will also be provided with advanced angiography services and easier access to nearby catheterization laboratories. In addition, stroke patients will receive free medicines and injections under this program.

The Health Department will lead the implementation process, while the Stroke Advisory Committee will provide supervision and strategic direction.
