The Punjab government has decided to allow Basant celebrations across the province next year, expanding the festival beyond its traditional celebrations in Lahore.

Sources said the provincial government is working on new legislation and detailed safety regulations to ensure Basant is celebrated in a controlled and secure environment. The festival is expected to take place across Punjab during the last week of January 2027.

The government is likely to announce designated venues, kite-flying rules and other regulations in the coming days. Under the proposed arrangements, kite and string manufacturing will be allowed at specific locations, with production expected to start in October this year.

Officials are also developing a system to control the prices of kites and string. The aim is to ensure that festival supplies remain available to the public at officially approved rates.

Safety measures covering kite flying, manufacturing and the use of kite string will also be included in the proposed legislation, according to sources. The government plans to revive Basant under a regulated system while reducing the risks linked to kite flying.

A detailed administrative plan covering designated venues, manufacturing procedures, and safety requirements is expected to be announced soon.

The decision represents a major change from the previous approach of restricting Basant activities mainly to Lahore. If implemented, the plan could turn the traditional festival into a province-wide celebration under government supervision.
