In another setback for travelers, Pakistan Railways has increased ticket fares by two percent across all train services, including Mail, Express, Inter-city, and passenger trains. The new prices will be applied starting Friday, July 18, 2025.

The decision comes in the wake of a significant jump in diesel rates, which recently rose by Rs11.37 per litre.

With the department using around 350,000 litres of diesel every day, this change has led to an added daily cost of Rs3.99 million, pushing the monthly fuel expense up by nearly Rs119.5 million.

To manage its growing costs, the department is also planning to hand over certain services to the private sector, including the commercial management of passenger trains.

According to a representative from the Ministry of Railways, the operation of brake and luggage vans, both under government control and private partnerships, has earned Rs3,959 million over the past three years.

Even amid financial pressure, Pakistan Railways managed to generate almost Rs83 billion in revenue over the past eleven months, showing an improvement of Rs6 billion compared to the same time last year.

Of this, passenger trains brought in Rs42 billion, freight services added Rs29 billion, and the remaining Rs. 12 billion came through other sources.
