The National Disaster Management Authority has issued a warning for heavy rain and snowfall in the northern parts of the country from January 16 to 22, according to a source.

Officials said a fresh westerly weather system will bring intense rain and snow to Gilgit Baltistan, upper areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir.

Moderate to heavy snowfall is expected in Gilgit, Hunza, Skardu, Astore, Chitral, Dir, Malam Jabba, Swat, Battagram, Naran, Kaghan, Galiat and Murree. Rain and snow are also likely in Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Bagh and Poonch in Azad Kashmir.

Authorities warned that heavy snowfall could make roads slippery, lead to temporary closures and reduce visibility. The chances of avalanches, landslides and road slippage have increased in mountainous regions.

The NDMA added that several areas of Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan may also receive rain between January 20 and 23, which could disrupt power supply in some places.

Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel in hilly areas. Those who must travel should use safety chains on vehicle tyres. People are urged to wear warm clothing, use heaters with caution, and pay special attention to children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions during the cold spell.
