Former Sindh assembly speaker Agha Siraj Durrani dies at 72

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and former Speaker of the Sindh Assembly, Agha Siraj Durrani, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 72, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah confirmed in a statement.

In his message from the Sindh CM House, Murad Ali Shah expressed deep grief and said Durrani was “a sincere, loyal and principled leader of the party,” adding that he played a key role in strengthening the Sindh Assembly and promoting democracy.

“Agha Siraj Durrani made public service the axis of his politics,” he said, offering condolences to the bereaved family. “The services of the late Agha Siraj Durrani will always be remembered,” he added.

President Asif Ali Zardari also conveyed “deep sorrow” over Durrani’s death, acknowledging his lifelong political and public service. ”

The president paid tribute to his political and public services, noting his role in strengthening democracy and serving the people of Sindh,” read a post shared by the Presidency on X.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also lauded Durrani’s contributions, saying his role in politics and public welfare would “always be remembered.”

Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar described Durrani as a “seasoned parliamentarian and devoted public representative.” In his post on X, Dar said he was deeply saddened by the loss and prayed, “May Allah Almighty grant him the highest place in Jannah and give strength to his family and loved ones to bear this huge loss.”

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab expressed sorrow over Durrani’s passing, calling him an “honourable man who stood by the PPP and the leadership during the toughest of times.”

National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq remembered him as a “wise and astute politician,” adding that his role in promoting and safeguarding democracy would not be forgotten. “The void created by the passing of Agha Siraj Durrani will not be filled for a long time,” he said.

Born in 1953, Durrani completed his matriculation from St. Patrick’s School, Karachi, in 1971, earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree, and later obtained an LLB from Sindh Muslim Law College.

He began his political journey alongside his elder brother, Agha Salahuddin, contesting the 1985 non-party elections under General Zia-ul-Haq from Shikarpur, but was unsuccessful. In 1990, he was arrested on embezzlement charges during Nawaz Sharif’s first tenure and spent some time in jail.

Agha Siraj Durrani went on to serve two consecutive terms as Speaker of the Sindh Assembly from 2013 to 2018 and from 2018 to 2023, earning respect as one of PPP’s steadfast and influential leaders.
