LAHORE: The Punjab government on Monday prepared a major biker subsidy scheme for 2026 aimed at providing direct relief to motorcycle users across the province, according to official sources.

Under the proposed plan, eligible motorcycle users will be given a subsidy of Rs100 per litre on petrol. This plan is considered one of the largest fuel relief programmes designed for a specific group in the province. The purpose of the initiative is to reduce the burden of rising fuel prices on people who depend on motorcycles for daily travel.

Rs24bn funding sought for biker subsidy programme

Sources said the Punjab government has officially requested Rs24 billion from the Finance Department to start the biker subsidy scheme. A summary has already been forwarded to the Chief Minister of Punjab for approval. Once it receives approval, the Finance Department will release the funds needed to begin the programme.

Officials stated that the scheme is likely to benefit a large portion of the population. Estimates suggest that around 1.25 crore bikers in Punjab could receive support under this plan.

80 lakh bikers already registered for subsidy scheme

Sources from the Excise Department said that more than 80 lakh motorcyclists have already registered for the subsidy programme. Authorities added that the subsidy will be connected to verified usage so that only registered motorcycle users receive the fuel relief.

Officials also shared that nearly 50 million motorcycles have been registered in Punjab since 1980, showing the strong dependence on two wheelers for transport in both cities and rural areas.

Subsidy to be launched after registration completion

The Punjab government said the biker subsidy scheme will officially start once the registration process is fully completed and verified. Authorities believe this step is important to maintain transparency and ensure the benefits reach the right people.

Relief for daily commuters amid rising fuel prices

The biker subsidy plan is part of wider government efforts to support the public during rising inflation and increasing fuel costs. Officials said the programme mainly aims to help low and middle-income groups who rely on motorcycles for their daily travel.

Once introduced, the scheme is expected to reduce transportation expenses and make travel more affordable for millions of people across the province.
