Authorities have started removing containers placed on roads across Islamabad for more than three weeks after Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Captain (Retd.) Muhammad Sohail Chaudhry directed officials to clear all roads by Monday evening.

The move is expected to bring relief to residents, commuters and businesses that have faced difficulties due to security measures introduced ahead of a planned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) long march. Containers had been placed at major entry and exit points, key roads and areas around the Red Zone for nearly 24 days.

The extended road closures caused traffic problems and made daily travel difficult for people across the federal capital, while businesses also faced disruptions.

Under the latest instructions, officials have been asked to remove all containers by Monday evening. However, the full restoration of traffic will depend on how quickly the relevant authorities complete the operation and reopen the affected routes.

Islamabad has remained under tight security due to the expected political demonstrations. Authorities had earlier justified placing containers on roads as a precaution to maintain law and order and protect sensitive installations.

Meanwhile, Islamabad Police had previously held discussions with goods transport representatives over the use of containers for security purposes.

The IGP also directed officials to help return containers carrying essential and perishable goods. He said owners whose containers had been used for law and order arrangements would be paid appropriate rental charges.

The removal operation is expected to improve traffic flow across the capital. Residents and motorists have been advised to keep track of traffic police updates for information about reopened roads and any remaining diversions.
