NDMA Chairman Inam Haider Malik said Thursday that the current monsoon spell will continue for another two to three days, as per the report.

Malik explained that water levels remain high at Head Panjnad and Guddu Barrage, which has led to severe flooding, damaging crops and sweeping away livestock. He added that the flood situation in the Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab rivers is now under control.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, with 2.4 million people shifted to safer areas in Punjab and another 1.5 million relocated in Sindh.

Malik acknowledged the role of welfare organizations and emphasized that all government departments are working together to improve disaster response systems.

According to him, deliberate breaches were made in embankments at certain points to ease river pressure. The Punjab government has supplied 9,000 tents and ration bags, while more than 9,000 tons of food have been distributed among flood-hit families in the province.

Malik cautioned about more rainfall expected in central Punjab and Azad Kashmir from September 16 to 18.

He also underlined the urgent need for stronger action against climate change, pointing out that rising temperatures and fast-melting glaciers are worsening flood risks.
