Fresh rain and snowfall continued in Gilgit-Baltistan on Wednesday, causing landslides that blocked the Karakoram Highway at several points between Diamer district and Kohistan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Thousands of passengers traveling between Gilgit-Baltistan and other parts of the country were left stranded at different locations along the highway on Tuesday night. Among those affected were patients, elderly people, and children who could not continue their journeys because of the road blockages.

Diamer police reported that landslides occurred at multiple sites in Diamer and Kohistan districts on Tuesday. The debris blocked the Karakoram Highway from Barseen in Upper Kohistan to Pattan in Lower Kohistan.

According to Diamer Deputy Commissioner Attaur Rehman Kakar, the highway has been closed at various locations in Upper and Lower Kohistan due to landslides. He added that debris removal operations will begin once the weather improves, and the Frontier Works Organisation will carry out the clearance work.

Police said that most areas of Gilgit-Baltistan experienced rainfall over the past two days, while higher altitude areas received fresh snowfall. Intermittent rain also caused landslides in remote areas, disrupting road links and limiting access between communities.
