Dairy farmers in Karachi have asked for an increase of Rs100 per liter in the official milk price, saying that production costs have risen sharply, as reported on Sunday.

The Dairy and Cattle Farmers Association said that running dairy businesses at the current official rates is no longer possible due to higher expenses on fodder, electricity, fuel, and other essentials. The group has sent a letter to the Commissioner Karachi requesting a revision in the milk price.

Association representative Shakir Gujjar said the dairy sector is going through a serious financial strain, and farmers are unable to continue under the existing pricing system.

Farmers also claimed that the cost of fodder and other inputs has gone up by around 75 percent. They added that they will decide their next course of action after internal discussions.

Mubashir Qadeer Abbasi warned that milk supply in Karachi may be disrupted as many farmers are struggling with limited working capital.

If the increase is approved, it would add pressure on consumers already dealing with high food prices, although farmers insist the current rates are not workable anymore due to rising costs.
