After the success of electric buses in Punjab, Lahore is set to introduce an electric tram service to provide citizens with better transport options, as per the report.

The tram will operate from Harbanspura to Thokar Niaz Baig as part of a new urban transport plan.

Authorities have also decided to reorganize underpasses along Canal Road into single lanes to improve traffic movement.

The Jail Road underpass will be shifted from the left to the right side of the road for smoother flow. The electric tram will run on the far left side of Canal Road to avoid disturbing regular traffic.

Road width near bus stops will be expanded to ensure easy boarding and smooth operations. The Transport Department is currently reviewing all technical and practical aspects of the route.

Plans are also being discussed for building an underground road from Jallo to Harbanspura to improve city connectivity.

The first electric tram, imported from China, has already arrived in Lahore and will be tested on Canal Road.

It consists of three connected units, runs fully on electricity, and can travel 25 to 27 kilometers on just a 10-minute charge. The tram can carry up to 250 passengers and functions like a subway, but on roads.

A pilot project has begun near Lahore Airport to test the vehicle, which was assembled at the Ali Town Depot. Initially, the service will be offered free of charge during the trial period.

“The tram service will be free during the trial period. If the trial is successful, ticket prices will be introduced for regular operations,” a spokesperson confirmed.
