In the past 13 days, Karachi traffic police have issued e-challans to 68 police mobile drivers for violating traffic rules, as per the report on Saturday.

Officials said the fines were imposed for not wearing seatbelts and using mobile phones while driving, as the city’s automated e-challan system continues to apply equally to all violators, including law enforcement officers.

Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Munam Zafar and others have challenged the e-challan system in the Sindh High Court (SHC). Filed by Advocate Usman Farooq, the petition argues that the system unfairly penalizes vehicle owners instead of the actual drivers.

It also claims the government launched the system without improving road conditions, confirming vehicle ownership, or putting up proper traffic signs, while calling the sharp rise in fines, license suspensions, and ID card blocks “unlawful.”

The petition further noted that many vehicles in Karachi and Sindh still run under open letters, with excise records showing outdated ownership details, making fine collection problematic.
