The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a warning for heavy rainfall across Azad Kashmir and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, urging the public to remain cautious.

The monsoon season, which runs from June to September, is essential for easing summer heat and replenishing water reserves.

However, it also brings the risk of dangerous floods, landslides and displacement, especially in areas with poor drainage or high population density.

In an update posted on X at 3:30pm, the department reported that a “rain-bearing weather system” was forming over the Poonch, Bagh, Haveli and Sudhnoti regions of Kashmir.

This system is expected to bring “heavy rain with strong winds and thunderstorms” within the next two to five hours in parts of Azad Kashmir, including Kotli, Rawalakot, Bhimber, Mirpur and Neelum Valley.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, areas such as Muzaffarabad, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Kohistan, Murree, Galyat and nearby regions may also be affected.

The department has urged citizens to take safety precautions and remain informed.

Since the monsoon began in late June, at least 71 people, over half of them children, have lost their lives and 86 have been injured in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa alone, according to figures from the KP Provincial Disaster Management Authority.

Nationwide, the total number of casualties rose to 299 by Sunday, up from 234, as reported by the National Disaster Management Authority.

Earlier, the PMD had predicted more rain and wind-thundershowers across the upper and central parts of the country throughout the week.

It also called on disaster management authorities and local administrations to take early steps to prevent urban flooding.
