The Environment Protection Agency in Lahore has stopped two Punjab University buses from operating after they were found releasing heavy smoke, acting on an order issued by the Lahore High Court.
A spokesperson said the buses were polluting the air, and the university staff could not provide a valid environmental fitness certificate. Legal action has now been started under the Environmental Protection Act.
Last month, the Lahore High Court had already directed authorities to crack down on vehicles that create pollution. During the hearing, Justice Shahid Karim noted that many smoke-emitting vehicles were openly running on the roads and called for tougher steps to control pollution in Punjab.
The petitioner’s lawyer also pointed out that trees were being cut in Ghalib Market Park to make space for tennis courts. Justice Shahid Karim questioned why trees were being removed and said such construction should not take place in public parks.
The court then ordered that the work in Ghalib Market Park be stopped and directed the Director General of PHA to make sure the order is followed.
