The federal government has asked the provinces to give their recommendations on the support price for wheat. Punjab has proposed a price of Rs4,200 per maund, while Sindh has suggested Rs5,000 per maund.

The government is also considering whether to provide a subsidy on wheat or shift the higher cost to consumers.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has informed the federal government that it procures wheat from Punjab.

Imported wheat currently costs around Rs5,000 per maund after including additional expenses. The wheat was purchased at $345 per ton, with the total cost rising to nearly Rs5,000 per maund after other charges.

Farmers have raised concerns over the price difference, saying imported wheat is being purchased at Rs5,000 per maund, while local wheat was previously procured at around Rs3,500 per maund.

Local wheat contains around 25 percent gluten, compared with 23 percent in imported wheat.

Earlier, three provinces had sought 750,000 tons of wheat, while 215,000 tons have so far been imported. Of this quantity, 100,000 tons were allocated to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 115,000 tons to Sindh.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had requested 200,000 tons, Sindh 300,000 tons and Punjab 250,000 tons of wheat.

The government will reissue a tender for the procurement of another 200,000 tons of wheat. The additional quantity is expected to be imported at a higher price.
