LAHORE: The wait finally came to an end as Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz launched Pakistan’s first urban electric train, the Super Autonomous Rapid Transit (SRT), and took part in its trial journey herself.

She oversaw the road test from Ali Town to Muslim Town, examining the train’s design, onboard features, and how it performed in regular city traffic.

Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan briefed her on the train’s key features, its functionality, and the benefits it’s expected to bring to the public.

Locals along Raiwind and Canal Roads were visibly excited as they saw the sleek electric train begin its test run.

Already functioning successfully in countries like Turkey, China, and the UAE, the SRT is made by Norinco International.

It comes with three compartments and the option to add a fourth, can carry 320 passengers, and runs up to 40 kilometres on a single charge.

Outfitted with air-conditioning and modern features, the eco-friendly electric train aims to help curb pollution and reduce city traffic issues.

“Every day brings good news for the people of Punjab,” CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif said, expressing confidence that the SRT would enhance Lahore’s look and improve urban life.

She also shared plans to introduce similar electric transit systems in Gujranwala and Faisalabad, marking the beginning of a cleaner, modern transport era in the province.
