The Punjab government has decided to introduce fines for people and businesses caught littering as part of its expanding cleanliness drive across the province.

The decision was made during a meeting led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, where officials reviewed the progress of the Suthra Punjab project.

They briefed her on the positive public response, noting that vehicle tracking and live monitoring of waste containers are already helping improve efficiency.

Maryam Nawaz said the scale of the cleanliness effort was impressive, explaining that although the province started from scratch, the system has steadily strengthened.

She added that cities and villages should have had a proper waste-management structure long ago. It was agreed in the meeting that strict action and fines will be imposed on commercial areas and individuals who throw litter on roads.

The government also announced that sanitation vehicles will gradually shift to eco-friendly electric models, and waste-to-energy projects will be introduced to produce electricity from garbage. The chief minister instructed officials to present a detailed plan for the waste-to-value initiative by mid-January.
