KARACHI: A city court has directed the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and District Municipal Corporation-Central to compensate a man who lost his wife and infant son in the Shadman Nullah tragedy.

The heartbreaking incident occurred one night in 2022 when a family’s motorcycle plunged into an uncovered section of the under-construction Shadman drain, claiming the lives of the mother and her baby boy, who was swept away in the water.

Following the tragedy, the grieving husband took legal action and filed a compensation claim against the KMC and DMC-Central.

In its verdict, the court ruled that evidence clearly showed the tragedy resulted from negligence on the part of the two civic bodies.

“The KMC and the DMC-Central failed to perform their public duty. It was their legal responsibility to ensure supervision of the nullah and sewerage system to provide protection to citizens,” the judgment stated.

According to the petitioner’s lawyer, the court has ordered the authorities to pay more than Rs99 lakh in compensation to the affected family.
