Karachi Traffic Police have begun issuing e-challans for lane violations on Shahrah-e-Faisal from June 1, 2026, in an effort to improve traffic discipline and enhance road safety on one of the city’s busiest routes.

The enforcement drive follows a month-long awareness campaign that informed motorists about the lane rules and penalties for violations.

Speaking to the media, DIG Traffic Karachi Peer Mohammad Shah said the e-challan system is now fully active and violations are being detected through a digital monitoring system without direct interaction between traffic officers and drivers.

Under the new arrangement, Shahrah-e-Faisal has been divided into four lanes. The two right-side lanes are reserved for fast-moving vehicles such as private cars, jeeps and double-cabin vehicles. The two left-side lanes have been allocated to slow-moving traffic including motorcycles, rickshaws and commercial vehicles.

Traffic officials said motorcycles, rickshaws and commercial vehicles using the fast-moving lanes will be issued electronic challans. Private vehicles that repeatedly travel in the slow-moving lanes in violation of traffic rules may also face penalties.

According to authorities, improper lane usage remains a major contributor to traffic congestion and accidents on Shahrah-e-Faisal, as many motorists fail to follow lane discipline and create risks for other road users.

Under the revised penalty structure, motorcyclists will be fined Rs2,500 for lane violations. Private car drivers will face a fine of Rs5,000, while commercial vehicle operators will be charged Rs7,500.

DIG Traffic said the system is aimed at ensuring transparent enforcement of traffic laws while encouraging motorists to follow lane regulations. He added that the goal is to improve road safety and maintain a smoother flow of traffic rather than simply issue fines.

Traffic police have advised citizens to understand and follow the designated lane rules to avoid penalties.

Shahrah-e-Faisal is one of Karachi’s key roads, linking residential, commercial and industrial areas. With thousands of vehicles using the route every day, managing traffic remains a major challenge for authorities.

The launch of the e-challan system is part of the Karachi Traffic Police’s wider efforts to modernize traffic enforcement and improve road safety through the use of technology.
