KARACHI: The body of three-year-old Ibrahim, who slipped into an open manhole near Nipa Chowrangi in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, was found 15 hours after the incident.

The child had fallen into the uncovered manhole late Sunday night. The incident took place around 11 pm, prompting rescue teams to begin a search right away, but they were unable to find him.

After some time, the search operation was paused. During the break, local residents arranged heavy machinery themselves and continued digging to help with the efforts.

The victim was identified as Ibrahim, son of Nabeel. He had gone with his family to a departmental store when the tragedy occurred.

Rescue workers eventually recovered Ibrahim’s body from the manhole on Monday afternoon after a lengthy 15-hour search.

Sindh government spokesperson Sadia Javed said an inquiry has been launched to determine why the manhole had been left uncovered, adding that strict action will be taken against whoever is found responsible.

The Deputy Mayor of Karachi also took notice of the case and instructed all rescue agencies to stay on high alert and speed up the search. He said, “Anyone found negligent will face strict action.”

Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori expressed profound grief over the tragedy and said he stands with the devastated family.
