Will electricity prices go up in Pakistan from July 2025?

The Power Division has responded to recent claims suggesting that electricity prices would see a sharp hike of Rs25 per unit starting July 2025, at the beginning of the new fiscal year.

These reports, which surfaced just ahead of the federal budget announcement for FY2025-26, caused public concern about a possible rise in household expenses due to new taxes.

However, the Power Division has firmly denied these claims, clarifying that any decision regarding changes in electricity rates falls under the jurisdiction of the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra), which only acts after a formal hearing process.

Clarification on Second Electricity Meters

In addition, the Power Division has dismissed rumours about a ban on installing second electricity meters in residential properties.

Officials called such claims “misleading,” emphasizing that households with independent entrances, kitchens, and wiring can still apply for additional meters as per NEPRA’s Consumer Services Manual 2021.

Authorities also warned that spreading unverified information can lead to legal consequences under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), and urged the public to rely only on official updates.

Meanwhile, a targeted crackdown has begun in Faisalabad to address the misuse of multiple meters installed at a single residence.

This practice is often used to manipulate consumption levels and stay under the subsidized rate for “protected consumers” using less than 200 units monthly.

Many people have been found splitting their electricity use across several meters to benefit from lower tariffs, a practice now under strict scrutiny.
