Govt collects Rs490 billion in taxes from electricity bills in FY25

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) collected Rs490 billion in Withholding Tax (WHT) and General Sales Tax (GST) via electricity bills in FY 2024-25, a drop from Rs600 billion the previous year, due to a 3.6% decline in power consumption, which totaled 80,111 GWh compared to 83,109 GWh in the same period of FY24.

Industrial electricity usage also saw a sharp fall, dropping from 28,830 GWh to 21,082 GWh.

Meanwhile, tax revenue from salaried individuals surged to Rs552 billion, up from Rs367 billion in the previous fiscal year.

In the real estate sector, FBR gathered Rs235 billion under Sections 236C and 236K of the Income Tax Ordinance, Rs118 billion from 236C and Rs117 billion from 236K, compared to Rs90 billion and Rs104 billion respectively in FY24.

Overall, FBR collected Rs5.8 trillion in direct taxes in FY25, with Rs3.8 trillion coming from the corporate sector and Rs1 to Rs1.5 trillion contributed by the banking industry in income and withholding taxes.
