Government decreases electricity prices across Pakistan

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced a reduction in electricity tariffs across the country as part of the monthly Fuel Charge Adjustment (FCA).

According to an official notification, the national average FCA has been lowered by Rs2.1240 per unit, reducing the actual fuel cost to Rs10.8860 per kWh from the previous reference rate of Rs13.0100 per kWh.

For consumers in Karachi, electricity rates have been decreased by Rs3 per unit, while those in other regions will see a reduction of Rs2.12 per unit.

NEPRA issued separate notifications confirming that the revised rates will reflect in consumers’ electricity bills for March.

The reduction in Karachi is based on the December 2024 monthly adjustment, while the adjustment for the rest of the country is linked to January 2025.

However, this relief does not extend to lifeline consumers, protected consumers, electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS), or prepaid customers.

Last month, the federal government reinstated fuel cost adjustment benefits for households consuming up to 300 units and agricultural tube-wells, aiming to provide financial relief.

A spokesperson for the Power Division mentioned that this benefit, which was initially withdrawn in June 2015, has now been restored.

NEPRA has also directed Ex-WAPDA Distribution Companies (XWDISCOs) to implement the new rates in compliance with court orders.
